Augusta, Maine

Augusta is a hilly city huddled on the Kennebec River in central Maine. It is a small city, on a national scale, but fairly large by Maine perspectives.

Although Augusta is known as the capital city of Maine, complete with government agencies, tourism, and the like, there is so much more to this beautiful area...

The History of Augusta

Before the Europeans arrived in 1607, Algonquian Indians called what is now the Augusta area their home. The short-lived Popham Colony, which settled at the mouth of the Kennebec River, gave Maine its first exploration by English settlers.

Plymouth pilgrims settled and began a trading post on the east shore of the Kennebec River around 1628, and in 1646 a Jesuit priest visited the settlement and established a nearby mission for the Kennebec Natives.

Years of conflict between the English, French, and area Natives caused the early settlements to be deserted. Fort Western was later established as a supply post for Fort Halifax, farther up the Kennebec, but when the military necessity passed, the fort became a store and resident building. Originally called "the Fort," the growing village was first incorporated as Harrington, but ultimately became Augusta in 1797.

In 1827, Augusta was designated as the capital of Maine, which had only become a state in 1820. The city charter was established in 1849.
