Beach opportunities in the Katahdin/Moosehead areas and Aroostook County may be few and far between, but well worth the trip for a Maine summer vacation on a lakefront beach. _____________________________________
Lily Bay State Park, Beaver Cove Lily Bay State Park is on the shores of beautiful Moosehead Lake, the largest lake in Maine. It offers plentiful wildlife watching, swimming, boating, camping and hiking. Kineo's cliffs, which tower 800 feet above the water, give some of the most spectacular scenery in the area. There are two campgrounds, two boat luanch sites, boat slips, a swim area, playground and shoreline hiking trail. Open May 1 through October 15. Peaks-Kenny State Park, Dover-Foxcroft Peaks-Kenny Park is situated on the shores of beautiful Sebec Lake, where campers and vacationers will enjoy a small campground with plenty of privacy. Amenities include toilets, hot showers, a picnic area, bath house, and beach with lifeguards on duty. Hiking trails and an amphitheater complete one of the best summer vacation spots in Maine. Allagash Wilderness Waterway State Park, Aroostook and Piscataquis Counties The Allagash Wilderness Waterway is a 92-mile-long ribbon of lakes, ponds, rivers and streams that meander through northern Maine's thick forests. Protection of this waterway has become the determination of the people of Maine, and there are no human residents in the area. Visitors are encouraged to show respect and leave the fewest possible signs of their presence in this pristine area. Canoeing is one of the most popular activities here. Aroostook State Park, Presque Isle Aroostook State Park, located on Echo Lake, bears the honor of being Maine's first state park. This is a perfect location for discovering the north woods of Maine, with activities including hiking, swimming, canoeing, paddleboating, and camping. A shower house and scenic beach with a lifeguard on duty will entice visitors to relax in the sunshine. The lake offers trout fishing, as well. Open May 15 through October 15.
