Cobscook Bay State Park, DennysvilleCobscook Bay State Park is known for its average 24-foot tides, with some running as high as 28 feet. In fact, Cobscook is a Native American word meaning, "boiling tides." This park is perfect for the camper seeking peaceful solitude in the beautiful outdoors of Maine. The park offers more than 100 secluded campsites, many of which are right at the water's edge, providing an excellent view of the egg and flow of the tide. Fort Point State Park, Stockton Springs Located on a peninsula jutting into Penobscot Bay, Fort Point offers picnic and fishing spots and a 200-foot pier for visitors arriving by boat. Quoddy Head State Park, Lubec This eastern-most area of Maine that includes the postcard perfect peppermint stick lighthouse, offers rocky cliffs and a dense evergreen forest. The boardwalk provides access to a peat bog and there are hiking and whale watching opportunities. The Quoddy Head Light and fog cannon warn mariners of the dangerous cliffs, ledges and Sail Rock. Among the first to use a fog bell and later, a steam powered foghorn, this lighthouse greatly reduced shipwrechs in the foggy area, even as shipping increased. Open May 15 through October 15. Roque Bluffs State Park, Roque Bluffs Roque Bluffs offers a pebble beach on the ocean and a freshwater pond as well, for both fresh and salt water swimming.
