| Maine Islands
Most Mainers are rarely very far from the sound of the ocean. The majority of the population lives within 20 miles of the shore and many more live on Maine's numerous islands.
Many of Maine's islands are hardly more than rocks peeking out of the Atlantic, while others host entire towns and nature preserves. The largest island on the Maine coast is Mount Desert Island (pictured above), famous for Acadia National Park. Other large islands are Isle au Haut, Deer Isle, and Vinalhaven, all of which have established towns which are bustling in the summer with visitors and activities.
