There is a whole slew of military forts up and down the coast of Maine. Some are rather recent, dating only back to the early 20th century, while others go back to the 1600s.

Visiting Maine's historic forts is like taking a living history lesson. Many forts are still in good condition and offer gift shops, guided tours and even battle reinactments. Other forts have only their foundations remaining.
