| Hiking in Southern Maine
Bradbury Mountain State Park - Pownal, Maine. Hiking: .3 - 1.3 miles Not far from Freeport, just north of Portland, Bradbury Mountain State Park attracts visitors who enjoy picnicking, hiking and camping on its 590 acres of forested land. There are several easy trails, one less than a half mile to the summit, from which you can see the surrounding valleys and all the way to Casco Bay. Gilsland Farm - Falmouth, Maine. Hiking - .7 - 1.2 miles Gilsland Farm’s hiking trails wind through meadows, in and out of woods, and along the shore of the Presumpscot River estuary. All trails are gentle with no steep grades. The main trailhead is located just outside the environmental center at the end of the driveway. Hockomock Nature Trail - Bremen, Maine. Hiking - 1 mile Beginning at the visitor’s center, Hockomock Nature Trail is an easy, one-hour interpretive walk through thick woods, across beautiful meadows, and along the shore of Muscongus Bay. Josephine Newman Sanctuary - Georgetown Island, Maine. Hiking - 1.8 miles Hikers who visit the Josephine Newman Sanctuary can hike up bluffs that rise over 100 feet above the cove, study outcroppings of bedrock that have been twisted by the passage of time, or stand on a cliff and watch reversing falls that are caused by tidal waters tumbling over ledges. Marginal Way - Ogunquit, Maine. Hiking - 1.25 miles A popular village hike in Maine, Marginal Way winds along the shore of the Atlantic, linking Perkins Cove and the quaint village of Ogunquit, Maine. Stunning ocean views, benches to rest and take in the scenery, and the village of Ogunquit waiting around the bend. Mast Landing - Freeport, Maine. Hiking - 1.9 miles A hike that takes visitors through fields, across ridges, and by a tidal stream. There are opportunities to view coastal game, birds, and estuarine wildlife. The trail guides offer explanations of the area's natural history and the trails are perfect for people of all ages. Mousam River Estuary Trail - Kennebunkport, Maine. Hiking - 1.5 miles This trail follows an old railroad line and is part of Bridle Path, a tidal estuary. The sights include an open salt marsh, views of the ocean, thick woods, and sand dunes. Parsons Way Trail - Kennebunkport, Maine. Hiking - 2 miles The Parsons Way Trail is a cliff walk from Cape Arundel to Spouting Rock and Blowing Cave. The trail is named after Henry Parsons who wanted the Kennebunkport area to have a place for everyone to see the natural beauty of the area. While there, you will enjoy the views and the ocean spray. Portland Trails - Portland, Maine. Hiking - 3.75 miles The Portland trail system takes hikers along Baxter Boulevard and all the way around Back Cove. The beautiful sheltered inlet is home to shorebirds, wildlife and natural beauty right in the middle of an urban city. The best of both worlds! Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, Upper Wells Division - Wells, Maine. Hiking - 1 mile The trails here take hikers on a tour around a protected salt marsh, an uncommon sight in Maine. The grasses are an important environmental product and the views are unmatched. The trail is wheelchair accessible and can be walked by people of any age. Ring and Blueberry Buff Trails - York, Maine. Hiking - 1.8 miles These trails take hikers to the summit of Mount Agamenticus, the highest spot in York County, Maine, and sharing the trails are mountain bikers, horseback riders, and even ATV riders, though some trails are designated as hiking only. A lodge at the summit is available for group gatherings, reunions or picnics. River Run Trail and Bridle Path - South Berwick, Maine. Hiking - 2 miles This is a wide, shaded trail along a stand of Eastern white pine and hemlock trees. Though the impressive trees are enough reason to hike this trail, there is also the Hamilton House and the Salmon Falls River. Vaughn Island Trail - Kennebunkport, Maine. Hiking - .75 miles Vaughn Island is a tidal island preserving the views of Porpoise Cove and Turbats Creek, which are connected to one another at low tide by a narrow channel. Depending on the tide, visitors will have about an hour to wade across Turbats creek. Wells Reserve at Laudholm Farm - Kennebunkport, Maine. Hiking - 1.4 miles The Wells Reserve is formerly a Maine saltwater farm. The trails go over fields, through forests, and across salt marshes and beaches. Guided tours are offered with reservations and there are special events for families and groups. Children and families will find this a perfect hike. Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park - Freeport, Maine. Hiking - 1.6 miles With breath taking views of Casco Bay and Freeport Harbor, Wolfe's Neck Woods has many trails with self-guided tours and a picnic area. Ospreys are plentiful in this "neck of the woods," and the paths offer trails for children and those who are physically challenged.
